anyone else have these filters and have experienced very low flow rate? Yes taken apart and cleaned...didn't work. At first it worked awesome..for about a month...so of course its time to do maintenance right? so I took it apart and cleaned it, put it back together, and it didn't help at all, and now the water is barely trickling out of the out take tube. The damn instructions don't even tell you how to do maintenance on it for fuck sakes!!

220gal tank

Hi guys!

As the title says I have a 220gal tank that currently houses a 14in Black Peruvian Rhombeous Piranha.
I like the fish and he's very cool but he has some symptoms of hith showing and I dont know why.
My water is pristine with 2 2217's and an fx5 filters and Korilia 8 p/h and I only have a very thin layer of gravel so maintanence is a breeze.
Anyway this is a cichlid forum so I'll stop my rambling.

I may have a buyer for this fish in the near future so my question is what would you stock in this tank?
Keep in mind that I am keeping it bare with only a couple peices of driftwood and 2 large plants.
I would like something that grows large and that could possibly breed or be kept with other smaller fish.
A Jag comes to mind but is there any other similar species I could try that fit my criteria?
I am also a fan of the large dovies I see on this site could that be another possibillity and what is their scientific name?
Could I do a combination of med to large sized fish? I'm thinking 7-10in if not the dovi or jag

Any input is greatly appreciated and also I am keeping this tank mildy stocked so maintanence is easier.
My waterchange schedual is 50% every week and params are Ammo 0, nitrite0, nitrate 10-20, and ph is 7.6

Here's a pic of the setup so you get an idea of how I would like to keep things.

Opinions

Ok, so when I moved to Texas, I wasn't able to bring many tanks with me. Basically, I ended up with a 40-breeder and a 20-L. My parents are coming in October, and they are bringing my 50-gallon. Well, Petco had their $1/gallon sale, so I purchased 2 more 40-breeders and another 20-L.

One of the 40-breeders will house my skink when he finally comes down. I'm going to use the 20-L for small sumps. fshfrk will be helping me out quite a bit, I think. I have visited him and seen his tanks and his DIY equipment, and I was really impressed by the ingenuity.

Anyway, that leaves me with 2 40-breeders and the stocky 50-g. . . here's what I was thinking:

50-gallon: I thought about this today, and thought I was going to try and do a seahorse tank. I think it would be an interesting tank, and I can possibly have four seahorses in there. I was looking at Hippocampus erectus as the species of choice. Opinions?

40-breeder #1: This one, I wanted to be a little Central American cichlid tank with a member of the Genus Cryptoheros, either C. nanoluteus, C. panamensis, or C. spinosissimus. I wanted to add some tetras and a couple of livebearers or two different tetra species. Opinions?

40-breeder #2: I heard a very interesting talk about West African fish from Dr. Anton Lamboj last night at one of the local stores, and now I'm thinking either a species of Pelvicachromis (specifically, a variant of P. taeniatus) or Benitochromis (I'd like to find B. riomuniensis, but B. ufermanni or B. nigrodorsalis would be cool, too) with either Microsynodontis or a small Synodontis species (a group of S. nigriventris?) and maybe some kind of characin or lampeye. Opinions?

Other things I've thought about. . . a Tanganyikan tank with something like Altolamprologus or Neolamprologus; a tank with barbs and maybe a pair of Etroplus canarensis; community tanks with small groups of several school species; other fish with a species of Betta; clownfish and anemone; Guianacara and Centromochlus perugiae.

I just don't know what I want to do. I am trying to find some matching aquarium stands and lights, and then I should be good to go!

Jack Dempsey and Jewel

I’ve never mixed CA’s and Africans before. I had a JD once before and I know how aggressive and territorial they can be. And I’ve heard that Jewel’s can be aggressive too, but this is my first experience with them. They’re both babies (3”), and I have them in a 55g right now. I also have a large Frontosa (9”) and a Yellow Lab (5”) in there with a few oddball fish. When I first got them (about two months ago) the JD would chase the Jewel into the rocks and that was as far as it went. Now that they are getting bigger, the Jewel is becoming braver and gets really annoyed when the JD comes around his hiding spot. He charges the JD and even takes shots at him once in a while, but this usually happens when they’re hungry. When I did a search on this I found a video of the two fish locked up, and I don’t like that crap!

Has this combination ever worked for anyone? What do you think the chances are that can live together? If they battled would it be to the death, and who would win? Do you think that the other tank mates will be safe in there?

Finding compatible cichlids is always an adventure! Any opinions/advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Hello CM Folks,

Have any of you ever perform spawning by rubbing the vent area of fish and drop the fluid in a tank, and laters had frys ?

I have seen it on tv, They were showing the way how they gets the eggs and sperms from female/male fish, that guy actually did it with a Syringe (seems painful, and can be dangerous) and put the eggs/sperms in an incubator where oxygen supplies and temperature were stable. After 72 hours he opened the incubator's drawer and there were so many fry swimming out there.

A friend of mine told me about the same thing in fish, he said you can do it without using needles and just Rub the Vent area when the fish is mature enough and ready to spawn and Making/digging nest in gravel/stones.

If any of you did it, or knows about it, please refer me a site or link so I can read more about it, I have plans to do something like that if i have enough info. If that is possible, I can have the hybrid I want.

Ok so, here is the deal:

About 6 months ago I purchased piranha and since then learned that they have not adapted to my PH of 7.8...so much so that it causes them to flash on occasion. Because of this, I am sending them to a good home with much softer water (even though I adore their shy demeanor and that I raised them from babies). After looking at the different fish that appeal to me, I've really grown to like the look and temperament of Texas Cichlids. The recommended PH ranges vary. Would the cichlid do ok in my stable but higher PH?

I am so pleased, this weekend I managed to find four argentea, a fish that I have wanted for a long time now. They are only two inches at the moment, but they are two inches of fish perfection in my eyes. They have settled in well already, eating fine as well. I will try and get some pictures up in the dark room sometime. I know a few of you on here have them and may wonder why I am all excited lol, but I really have been after these for a very long time and they are not easy to come by this side of the pond.

How to add water to aquarium from python products

I just bought my first python "clean and fill - no spill" siphoner for water changes. My question is what is the correct way to add water to your tank using this system?

The directions says "Return to your tank and hold the gravel tube over the tank and slowly turn the switch to the open position..."
"Refill your aquarium. During the refilling process, the water is being aerated, eliminating some of the chlorine. If you choose to add water conditioners, you may add them into the stream of water as you are refilling the tank."

Is this a safe way to dechlorinize the water?

Or would it be better to add the water to a bucket with the right amount of water conditioner in the bucket and then pouring the water into the aquarium from the bucket?

Damn algae bloom!!!

Alright, so this totally feels like a newb question, but I don't know what else to do. I have never had a problem with algae blooms in my personal tanks. I maintain them properly, and in turn they stay clean and healthy.

However, for the past 6 months, I have been helping a friend maintain a 100g tank at his office. I started helping him with it when he had several fish die from infections due to poor water quality. At the time, the tank had detectable levels of ammonia and nitrite. I found that they were not vacuuming the gravel correctly (thick black sludge in the gravel) and the two bio-wheel filters were badly clogged. After I remedied these things, medicated the fish, and started keeping up on water changes and cleaning for him, the tank was crystal clear and healthy. About a month ago, the water started getting a green tint to it. Within a week of this, the water was completely green.

Now here is the kicker. The tank is in a window that gets full sun for a couple of hours in the morning and stays warm throughout the day. This should be a huge DUH of course, but he and everyone else keeps saying "We never had this problem before." My answer is that the very poor water quality did not allow algae to thrive in the tank, and now that the water is clean and healthy, the algae is thriving in the sun and warmth. My friend refuses to move the tank to a non-sunny location because he likes being able to see through it into the parking lot. I refuse to use any algae control chemical to fix the problem when there is very obviously a natural cause for it. Last week, I did a major water change and started dosing with a live bacterial solution called S.A.T from a company called Aquatic Bio-Control. I have used a couple of their other products with good results, so I decided to give this a try. S.A.T. is supposed to control algae natually using live bacteria. I have yet to see any results. It has only been a week so I am still hopeful.

Anybody have anything else that I can try that does not involve moving the tank or covering the back? Would it help to have a higher pH maybe? I am at a loss here.

Ammonia = 0ppm
Nitrite = 0ppm
Nitrate = 0ppm to 30ppm (depending on last water change)
pH = 6.6 to 6.8

So one of my cichlids has become paralyzed about half way down his body. He hides most of the time now, but use to be one of my most active fish. His spine seems to be slighly s shaped now, but still move around via his dorsal fins. I assuming he got injured while chasing or being chased. Is their a chance he we recover, should i try some chiropratic work and manipulate his spine some, or is it just a lost cause. he has been like this for about 2 weeks now...

Bill's new house

A few of you have probably followed the pics & story of my Texas cichlid "Wild Bill", after being in a 6x14x20 for a few months, I moved him inside to a 6x14x14 with a few tank mates.
No cichlids except for a female Firemouth that he grew friendly with.
He hates all other cichlids, and goes out of his way to kill them.
I have been power feeding & giving bi weekly water changes to other cichlids that I wanted to grow quickly so I could eventually add them to his tank.

After waiting for a few months, I finally got my 6x2x2.5 home. I then had to wait another 2 weeks for the cabinet to be made as I wanted it to be custom made.
I wanted it a little higher than normal as my Daughter loves to look in the tank as Bill is her favorite fish, but he doesn't feel the same way and smashes the glass every time she comes near, so having it a little higher would put him out of reach

Tank size: 6ft x 2ft x 2.5ft Approx 850 ltrs.
Overall size with cabinet & hood: 191cm x 66cm x 180cm.
Filtration: Fluval FX5, Internal Canister with media & sponges.
Lighting: 1x 6ft single with 2x 3ft Power Glo tubes, daily 8hrs. Soon to be upgraded to HO T5 double
Heating: 1x Eheim Jager 300wt, Soon to be upgraded to 2x Eheim Jager 300wt
Temp: 25c
pH: 7.0
GH: 120ppm
Water additives: A.P.I tap water conditioner, A.P.I Pond Melafix, Indian almond leaves

Tank when I got it home:

2 weeks later the cabinet arrives:

My daughter Lucy was absolutely amazed. She couldn't wait for her Bill, Friendly monster (Senegal Birchir) Bristles (Hoplo pair) & Scary Monster (RTC) to be added. These are names she has given to the fish except for Bill.

So at 7pm Friday 25-09-09 I started, I had to take most of the water out of the 6x14x14, Before I did that I started filling up from the hose and added the A.P.I Tap water conditioner. And also started to add some gravel from the 6x14x14

After filling halfway I started taking water from the 6x14x14 and adding it to the larger tank. I took out some more gravel, wood & plastic plants and put them in the new tank.
I also added the heater & Fluval FX5 and got it started, Ive had the FX5 on the 6x14x14 for approx 6 mths getting it ready for the new tank.

When I got to about 3/4 full I added some fish (Albino Tinfoil Barbs) I added some A.P.I Pond Melafix at this point as the ATB's have been taking a beating from Bill over the last few days.

I then completely emptied the 6x14x14 into the new tank and added the rest of the fish. I also added the cichlids that I have been growing out. I added 3 airstones & an airwall. Not something I want to keep in the tank long term, but added as I wanted plenty of flow in tank to stir the fresh water with the old.

I finished filling that tank with warmish water to bring it up to temp. I tested parameters Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate & pH with 0 Ammonia, Nitrite, 20ppm Nitrate & pH 7.4

The whole process took approx 2hrs with a couple of smoke & Bacardi breaks.
I added another 20kg of natural brown gravel & a black backing today, Also I tested water with the same readings as last night.

I haven't finished it as yet, I would like to remove the airstones and redecorate the tank again. It was a quick aqua scape as I wanted the cats to be able to hide and also the new fish to find quick homes from Bill
The fish in the tank:
Wild Bill - Texas Cichlid
Friendly monster - Senegal Birchir
Scary Monster - RTC
Bristles - Hoplo catfish pair
Dovii pair
Jaguar male
Jaguar cichlids x2
Gibbiceps
Albino Gibbiceps
Firemouth Female
A. pectinfrons x2
P. costatus x4
Albino Tinfoil Barbs x4

At the moment I'm deciding whether to put in 10x Silver dollars as more dithers.

More to come as I re aqua scape in the next few days.

People I'd like to thank:
Midland Pet & Aquarium Centre - Tank, Cabinet, Gravel, Heater, Globes, Backing
Terry - Firemouth, Birchir & delivering tank
Clint - Awesome airwall
Pacco - Tank
Kris - Building cabinet & lifting tank
Steve - Help lifting cabinet & tank
Lawdog - Little Jags
Facundo L.
Hi everybody

Hi everybody,
I've been reading posts in you're forum for a while now, I decided to join in because it is without doubt the best forum I've seen. (serious ass licking) .
Okay, I'm from Ireland, I have about four years experience in keeping fish and still rate myself a complete novice although I've learned a little, how do you people know so much
I started with a small community tank, guppy's gourami's and fish like that. Had all the disasters that comes with a moron with the brain set "they'll be fine".
I moved on to African cichlids when I got reasonable but still flakey knowledge of how to (care for fish).
I now have a 160g tank with sa/ca cichlids.
In the tank I have 1 adult Oscar, absolute sweetheart never bothers anything,
The rest i need some help with. I buy all my fish from the same lfs. I can bring back any fish that I don't want so I've bought more of each of the following than I can keep so I get exactly what i want.
My list is 1 adult Oscar, 1 juvenile Osacar, 2 juvenile jack dempseys, 3 juvenile firemouths, 1 gold severum, 3 juvenile green terrors.
I know I'm going to have to bring back some of these, I'm wondering can i only keep one of each of these?

Mark.

Dovii fighting it out on You Tube

Honestly, these videos are retarded. Guy keeps nice cichlids, but fights them which is just sad. In this Video, Mr Thug life has two male Dovii fighting and clearly one is going to eventually be outmatched by the other. I could careless if the owner "Real Hard Cichlids" is on here. These two videos are lame and unfortunantly in the hands of a guy who keeps them as a status symbol just as Pitbulls have become in the Ghetto.

Dovii in the Hood Part 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXEhPV6eVrI...feature=channel

Dovii in the Hood Part 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-rjEugELpc...feature=channel

Mixed feelings about getting rid of fish for other fish.

I've got a 4 year old Buttikoferi that I bought when it was a 2 inch baby. There is some attachment to this fish since I raised it into a 13 inch monster in a solo 75g tank. But I also have been having an urge to try different species. I really would like to try a baby Red Devil or baby Jaguar or maybe even both, at least for a little while. But a part of me feels guilty returning the Buttikoferi to the pet store where I got him. This is the only tank that I have and don't want to buy another tank. So buying another tank is out.

Just wondering if you guys have ever been through the same thing and if you ever get attached to your fish. Should I do it if I really want to try something different?

Need some help stocking my fish room

Ok here's the deal... me and my roommate are going to have a few empty tanks when he gets all moved in and settled in. We're trying to figure out how we want to stock everything. Nothing is completely up in the air though, we have several fish we HAVE to work around, so help me out.

210gallon: For sure going in this tank: 1x Escondido, 1x Caquetaia spectabilis, 1x Zonatum, 1x Barred Midas
As far as the rest of the tank goes, this is what I'm thinking: 1x Argentea, 1x lyonsi, 1x pearsei... These are just some that I like, isn't for sure. Others I have thought about are: Archocentrus centrarcus, robertsoni, synspilum.... it will heavily depend on what's available, but I more than likely will be ordering from rapps so most of these should be available.

125gallon: 1x 9.5" dempsey... he's huge so his tank mates would need to be pretty big already, 5" GT. That's it for that one... so the rest are up in the air, we were thinking 1 maybe 2 more cichlids for this tank.

125gallon: This tank will be empty so it is completely up in the air. We were thinking a larger breeding pair like festae maybe. But doesn't have to be a pair of anything, could be another community tank.

110gallon: electric blue dempsey breeding project. This tank is set in stone, we have 5 blue genes, and will be ordering electric blues in about a week or two. should we add any tankmates? We were thinking possibly sajicas or other smaller cichlids, or should we not even risk mixing fish with the blues?
