DISCUSBOOK 01 - New stunning Publication

Hi great Cichlid guys,

I wanted inform you all at C-madness, also Discus and other cichlids as well as all fish and plant lovers, Amazon and nature enthusiasts, as well as Angelfish lovers. We just published a very unique new book. It contains for the first time in any publication, internet or other any media, all the 9 natural angelfish variants (species) in detail. There is a very large article on the real P. altum (demonstrating that it has never been bred before). There are new cichlids discoveries, new characoids and so much more in it. All from the end of 2009, including 20 pages on new, never seen sucker catfishes, as well as rediscoveries of amazing loricariids in Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela at the end of 2009. Also stunning biotope aquariums and how to do them for discus and other cichlids - never seen before done in such an extent of informations.

This is a world-wide first publication of its kind.

It is called Discusbook, but actually it is a 114 page thick hardcover magazine in A4 size, with photographs on nature and discoveries never seen or published anywhere previously.

It will come out yearly (to follow up with my Discus volume 1 and soon coming volume 2), and this is 01 issue.

A short demonstration to be seen, as well as what its contents are, under
http://www.aquapress-bleher.com/index.php?...ge&Itemid=1

Enjoy,

Heiko Bleher
www.aquapress-bleher.com

I've got a solo Red Devil that I was hoping would be a beast. But he's a very picky eater and not growing to his potential. I feed it only Hikari cichlid gold. And now he only eats a few pellets and leaves the rest. I've tried skipping a day of feeding and it still only eats a few pellets and leaves the rest.

A fish expert who works at a fish store convinced me to buy Tetra jumbokrill freeze dried jumbo shrimp and said Red Devils love that food 9 times out of 10. I put a piece in there tonight and the Red Devil wouldn't even touch it.

Should I just play the stubborn game that some fish tend to play and wait it out several days before feeding the jumbokrill?

Will a Red Devil get so hungry that it will have no choice but to eat the jumbokrill?

Or will the Red Devil continue not to eat it and starve to death?

Currently I've got a solo Red Devil in a 75g. It's going well. But I thought I might want to try something different with a little more excitement somewhere down the line. I still want some aggression. But this time I would want at least 2 fish. My top fish on the list would be a convict, Jack Dempsey, and some type of lively catfish if that would be possible. I'm just not sure what would be good combinations.

So what are some good two to four fish Central American combinations that would work in a 75g tank?
Red Texas Cichlid Not Into Rock

For those of you who have been following my young breeder Red Texas cichlid who recently sprung from obscurity into the ranks of the Construction Union. These are yesteray'd developments. Trying to assuage him for letting his nest be overrun by current, I brought a few choice rocks back for him from Long Island. He maneuvered the 2 small pieces of slate into sides for the egg deposition area, and them much to my surprise when I added a middling piece of fossiliferous brachiopod rock. he tried to nip me with his BIG pearly whites, and procedured to drag the rock which weighs as much as he does to the far corner of the tank. As long as I was positioning new smaller power filters, he came right up and snatched the black plastic cover off one and proceeded to place it behind the two slates. It's too bad I can't get a keyboard in the water: I think he could write this diary himself!

I have a 90 gallon tank, and can not keep any cichlids in their. When ever I put a cichlid in the 90 gallon they seem to be shy and unhappy and stop eating. I have a cory cat in their that seems to be ok, in fact the dichlids are not catching any disease or anything but just seems to not like the tank. I am using an aqua clear filter the biggest one that they make, I forgit the model number. Do you think I should add a canister ot the tank? I do water changes 25% once a week.

My male and female grammodes don't like the tank, if I put them in the big tank (look at my signature) then they are happy, if I put my Escondido in their then I have the same proplem. I need to put a pair of something in their to give me more room in my 360. Do anyone have any suggestion on what may be the problem?

Red Texas Cichlid Battles Adversity

I have seldom in my 40 years of expereince encountered a fish with the tenacity and intelligemce of my male Red Texas Cichlid. In the past two weeks I have posted how he totally rearranged a 30 gallon tank overnight to best accommodate a female, how he wooed and seduced a newly introduced female at first sight, how he sequentially arranged and cleaned rocks for her to lay eggs, and, now, unfortunately after losing their eggs most likely to the turbulence of a 50 gallon filter, he recognized the problem before I did. Early this morning he constructed a 15 inch high gravel berm to intercept the current from the filter. He worked at lit frentically from about 5 AM to 9, then enlisted the help his female Midas cichlid mate to elevate it to 18 inches. He woke me up many some very loud noises as he attacked the outflow of the power filter and bit it very hard. He then placed himself right in front to it it and stared at it like a malignant enemy. By 9 AM, I realized that he intended to eliminate the filter if he could, so I assisted him by disconnecting it. He stuck his head in it and bit at it viciuosly as I removed it. I replaced it with a much slower flow rate power filyer which he started down for several hours, inserting his his inside now and then. He then busied himself with rearranging the nesting area and stopped adding to the berm. Unfortunately the female has not yet realized that her remaining eggs are almost certainly unfertilized, but her companion seems to be thinking ahead.

Suble But Poentially Important Cues on Mating Compatability

I have had in my possession for two years a curious fish who as can best tell is 1/2 Texas Cichlid, 1/4 Carpinte. and 1/4 Midas Cichlid. It was unimpressive as a juvenile but at 4 1/2 inches developed red gills, red frills on all fins with an olive and blue ground color and began digging more than any fish I have ever owned. It dug itself a "porch" to sleep under and did miscellaneous digging all over its 30 gallon tank until it reached 7 inches. At that point it grew a white lipless beak like a true Rose Queen, became belligerent, ousted a 9 inch pleco, and I was forced to remove its few tank mates. It's persisent efforts at digging led me to think it was looking for a mate. I had 3 options all about its size, which was now 8 inches 1. a half Kamfa half Midas Cichlisd which was tank bred. It nearly scared this fish to death. . I tried a large female Red Dragon Flowerhorn which had proven aggressive on previous breeding attempts. This fish induced one of the oddest behaviors in the Texas Hybrid I have seen. It buried the bottom of its head in th gravel and vibrated rather violent whenever the Flowerhorn approached. After several hours of this I assumed they were not compatible. 3. Finally I added (with some reservation) a wild caught Midas which had bred with two Kamfa Flowerhorns but also killed 2 others. They immediately got along famously, did some ritual dancing, and both got to work excavatong the rest of tank until they had constructed a foot square pit around a round flat rock with 9 inch high gravel walls. They are now defending the pit from fingers and algae scrapers and seem intent on bredding. I am interested in correspending with anyone who has observed the head in th sand response, or similar situations.

carpintis 'vontehillo'

Originally Posted by Aquamojo All I can say is that your reputation is something you work to build every day...and something you can lose in a matter of minutes. He has a great looking Carpinte variant there, yet felt compelled to use a picture 3 years old...and of a hybrid...to sell the fish. Go figure.

And some folks work at trying to tear down reputations even if it's only every other third Tuesday; and owning their own web forums - holding a certain amount of lopsided sway over a given limited segment of a fairly naive "web community" - not having to work too terribly hard at it?

About five years ago, at one particularly virulent interlude in the Conkel-hater wave, encountered the following at www.aquamojo.com:

http://forum.aquamojo.com/index.php?...5729&hl=conkel

So one Blaze Dec 19 2004, 05:02 PM starts a thread called “don conkel”
and writes: Does he have a website if so how do I get to it ???

Obviously, Don’s wholesale list was then posted.

Then Aquamojo Dec 20 2004, 08:40 AM flippantly chirps:
QUOTE:
outstanding list ... and sooooooo affordable too. (IMG

AND.....the disease that comes with the fish is FREE!!! ???

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
The context is clear and meaning unambiguous. Apparently, Aquamojo saw the need then to associate Don Conkel's Tropicals with the FREE disease that comes with the fish and literally nothing else. So yes, Go figure. Tended to notice the pattern in those times. This is only one example of many involving Aquamojo that stands out in memory. The "Conkel vieja melting pot" type comments were smeared all over www.aquamojo.com for a few years until some but not all were redacted.

Of course, that was then and this is now. But it gives one pause for reflection. So times change...and targets change with 'em?

It might make one wonder about the ultimate source of the Conkel bashing given the "below the radar vanguard" (if you'll pardon the expression) perpetuating the Conkel-hater crew, or now, at last, the guilt-by-association Ira-hater remnants of what has finally congealed into an insipid little Ira-hater club? True, if Ira posts pics of non-vontehillo, purported to be vontehillo, that's an honest mistake. I don't know the man personally and have only spoken to him once on the phone. Didn't see any reason to play an Inquisitor wannabee then and don't see any need to try and crucify him now. Wonder what would possibly motivate anyone to even consider doing so?
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

It's funny the conclusions "hobbyists" (web hobbyists) sometimes jump to.

Q: Why has no one recently asked why Escondido are no longer caught from the wild? Fished out, perhaps? And Chairel? Same story? Not sure. And if fish are WC and happen to be "called" Vontehillo, for good reason, then only of ignorance would one refer to them by Escondido or Lahillas or whatever? Did so few notice that all of the DCT wild cichlids are attached a geographical epithet? Would you prefer DCT cease doing so?

Q: Why is it such a deep mystery that DC or IRA or ANYBODY would refer to a WC fish by its collection point? Is that really the cause for such suspicion and even greater cacophony?

Q: Why has someone not asked the even more obvious question, Mo? "Don, have you actually been to Vontehillo? Did you, Don, collect the fish there yourself?" Because you might be surprised by Don's (possible) answer: "No, hobbyists, one and all, I did NOT EVER go to Vontehillo, nor do I have any immediate intent to do so, because I have more pressing concerns. I do, however, implicitly trust the man who collected them for me. If you're calling him a liar you may as well call me one too. If any of you would like to go there and collect for yourselves, I have it on sound reportage that it's indeed N of Luguna Chairel, S X SE of Tampico, about 2 miles E of the Caribbean." I wouldn't put words in Don's mouth, but if you call him up at the number listed at his website and ask him, there is a significant degree of probability that's roughly along the lines of what you could learn, if/when learning is the name of the game at web forums.

FWIW, I had a slight problem with the "celare est arte summa cum laude" stuff. I think I read in high school that "All art is deception" though I don't think I'd take it to heart or made it my credo. So maybe for some all "rep" is deception. But one thing's for sure; DCT dominates the planet in the distribution of rare & wild American cichlids, and anyone that further facilitates that, LFS retailers and Ira alike, only amplify the thing. No one with an IQ over 86 ever says, "DCT stock is crap," or "DC is deceitful," matter of fact the overwhelmingly vast majority of hobbyists and retailers worldwide say precisely the opposite. So if Don supplies Ira, therefore would be a fairly solid inference that rises a wee bit above suspicious minds and "web forum rep," hopefully.

Smear-merchs REALLY need to get a life, perhaps?

Controversy? Only where suspicious minds lurk...

Obviously, at least one of the "other" forums is wrestling with the truth, surprisingly enough all the way up from moderator to owner, clear from here to Silver Springs, but soon enough, falsehoods may come back to bite a person, and sometimes bite down hard. IOW, in my estimate, innuendos about legitimate cichlid wholesalers/distributors et. al. rep or no rep ain't too cool. The extremely negative impact on the unsuspecting cichlid hobbyist and hobby as a whole is concerning. Does the ACA as a whole "sanction" blatant garbage habitually spewn all over the net??? One can't help wondering.
